To celebrate the launch of a public exhibition in the Bodleian Library on 'A Renaissance royal wedding' running from March until May this year, Dr Natalia Nowakowska will be giving a public lecture on 'The Polish-Italian Royal Wedding of 1518: Dynasty, Memory & Language'

In 1518, the Milanese-Neapolitan princess Bona Sforza travelled to Krakow to marry King Sigismund I of Poland, in one of the most celebrated weddings seen in Renaissance Central Europe. The wedding is remembered today as bringing Italian food and culture to Poland. However, this lecture, marking the 500th anniversary of the wedding, will explore how it also generated new kinds of political ideas and language.

A Renaissance Royal Wedding

2018 marks the 500th anniversary of the wedding of the Milanese-Neapolitan princess Bona Sforza and King Sigismund I of Poland.  It was one of the most celebrated and internationally significant weddings seen in Renaissance Central Europe. The ERC-funded Jagiellonians project, directed by Dr Natalia Nowakowska, is supporting a programme of events to explore new thinking around this key union, its influence and its remembrance.
